Sometimes a picture really is worth a thousand words

Roadside sign in Duval County, Florida, a county that ranks next to last in the quality of public education in a state that ranks 48th nationally in per-student expenditure.  But we are not to worry, Gov. Skinhead Scott is going to take care of it by cutting millions from the education budget.  We'll soon have the distinction of being last.

Hope this guy cooks better than he can spell.

  1. No, never fear, you'll always be ahead of SC, where I have a snapshot collection of misspelled Sweet Potato signs.

When my husband retired from his job as Director of Readiness for the Alaska Air Command, USAF, twenty years ago, he began his second career by teaching in a roach-ridden school in the middle of SC tobacco fields in a county an hour from home. A county that divided its tiny self into three districts so that the administrators of those districts could collect as salary 80% of the funds available for education in the county.

We're still decompressing from that change of atmosphere. He'd always wanted to teach.

  3. Jesus Christ...the guy sells Boiled P-NTUS! ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. What did you expect?

I love me some boiled p-ntus. It makes me homesic (sic) to see that sign. It not only makes my mouth water, but it reminds me of my high school senior year English class.

Kidding aside, I think the poor fellow got "nuts" mixed up with "anus". Obviously confused.

  4. My guess is the guy is Haitian, realized he screwed up, couldn't afford the materials to make a new sign and said, fuck it, I'll use it anyway. Strange thing is, there was no sign of anyone selling boiled peanuts.

  5. I don't know about the Duval County in Florida, but I was given a tour of Duval County in Texas and the lowdown on what went on there. Only in America?

  6. I have to wonder, is a picture still worth 1,000 words if they're not all spelled correctly? Isn't there some appraisal service to monitor this?

One of my favorite pairs of signs here in Bubba County is at the Poplar Ridge - or Popular Ridge - convenience store. It all depends on which side of the road you're coming from.

  7. Damn I can't decide whether I want to continue tutoring my 6 years old boys or just throw in the damn towel. Snyder of MI just gutted the state ED budget and the emergency financial manager for the Detroit School system just took back 30% of teachers wages and benefits.

  8. What Nance said, South Carolina will not let its honor of being first at being last fall.

I hope I wrote that right.

  9. Intelli... an appraisal service? You mean another government bureacracy? Forcing people to be educated? More invasion of privacy? You must be a pinko, commie, liberal.

  16. But I like it.
I don't know what you're all getting so hot under the collar for?

    Here goes:

    a) he knows what P sounds like
    b) he knows that Pea sounds the same
    c) he's dyslexic and probably very artistic
    d) for heaven's sake, go buy his peanuts and slap him on the shoulder for initiative.

  17. Friko... therein lies the problem. There was no one selling P-ntus, or peanuts either for that matter.
