To Too or Not To Tatt

Mostly, I don't like tattoos.  They're ugly at any age and butt-ugly in old age.  I kinda like the discreet little butterfly type in hidden places but even most of those have the artistic value of a slug.  Now, along comes a new age of tattoo art that might, might I say, make me change my mind.

Of course, then there are those that are beautiful on every level.  A breast cancer survivor.
And, like everything else, there are those that go too far.

I guess it takes all kinds of folks to make up this world.  Thank goodness no one is posting pictures of me!

  1. Even as an artist, I can't stand them and why the hell anyone would want to do this to their body totally escapes me. But then, I AM a persnickety old goat...or so I am told.

    1. Persnickety Old Goat seems like a pretty good title for a song.

  2. There are certain categories of tattoos I don't like...the prison variety and what I think of as the old style navy tats or getting your girlfriend's or boyfriend's name tatted. But for the most part I like them. I have seen some gorgeous art work as tats. I'll take tats any day over all those weird piercings and tongue slitting and gigantic ear holes.

  3. Yikes, the ones that look like they're carved into the body are really freaky. I have 2 tatts... one on my chest (wolf howling into the moon), and one on my shoulder.. another wolf, based on a paiting by Susan Boulet, called Spirit Wolf. I think it is very beautiful.. even at 60, not regretful of it. These new tatts are watercolory artistic, but some look like paint splashed on the body. and you could get sick of that pretty quickly.

    1. If they hold their color over the years I think it can be a really cool expression. But in my limited experience, they fade and begin to look like a smear. I must confess, exploring for young ladies' tattoos is a favorite pastime.

  4. That's what I'm afraid of...that I'd get sick of something so permanent. I could see experimenting with something that would grow out (you know, like a frizzy perm or a bad dye job). I guess I'm too chicken.

    1. I've always been too much of a nature boy to even wear jewelry. I don't even wear a watch.

  5. Those last 3 are a trip. I got a tat at 17 a NOT inconspicuous butterfly. My chief told me not to, so I had to.

  8. What a brilliant idea! But then again, I'm a tattoo fan... But also the subtle kind, not the all over the place ones...
