Darwin Award Candidate #1

A Russian finalist at the World Sauna Championships in Finland died Saturday and the event was suspended, according to the organizers, the AP reported.

Both of the events finalists, Russia's Vladimir Ladyzhensky and Finland's Timo Kaukonen, were rushed to the hospital after collapsing during the competition, in which contestants are made to endure temperatures of 230 degrees Fahrenheit (110 degrees Celsius) for as long as they can.  Ladyzhensky later died.


WTF?  A sweating contest??  Maybe we Americans aren't the biggest dumbasses in the world after all.

    It would appear so. Apparently evolution came to a resounding halt right around the last Ice Age, up there in the tundra. I am thinking a bit of volka was involved, as well.

    It is 105 here today...I am a wet pig and irritable, and possibly dying as I write this. I cannot imagine a rational person participating in that dumb fuck event.

    I know it's a cruel thing to say, but deep inside, it always makes me smile when some dumbass gets what's coming to him... like that crocodile character. Asshole showed nothing but disdain for Mother's creatures and finally got what was coming to him. Amen.

    Didn't the Native Americans do something like this only after taking a bunch of peyote?

    But Mr. C., Only time I've ever disagreed with you is about Steve Erwin. I watched him save so many different crocodiles from terrible situations. I'm not saying he wasn't a dumbass but I always felt he celebrated nature more than anyone I'd ever seen.

    OK ladies. Maybe I was a bit severe on the Crocodile guy. I suppose running down all sorts of animals and wrestling them to the ground with your knee on their neck is respectable behavior, I did my fair share of it in my youth. I guess I've just become an old softy.

    there are lots of dumb competitions. people die in body building, in freediving, in motor racing....

    so why is a sauna comp dumber?
