| I don't get it. Read in the Guardian an article about a Goth festival in a little English burg. I suppose it's no worse, or different, than phony baloney biker "outlaws", but the thing is, I don't get it. What makes grown adults live an imaginary life? Isn't there enough bull crap in the real world? |
A few years ago I went to Bike Week in Daytona Beach with a friend who was on assignment to shoot a cover photo for American Iron magazine. Invariably, we would see these biker guys all decked out in their fearsome gear only to find that in real life they are mechanics or even, in one case, a dentist.
I don't get it.
It's just Halloween for grown-ups, though many grown-ups just cut to the chase and celebrate Halloween itself. Dressing in costumes has always held an appeal for people. It's a chance for them to live out fantasies and let their hair down. Too many people feel restricted in their daily lives, so anything that's designed to let them 'play' will find a few disciples.
ReplyDeleteThis is pretty much the way I feel Bubba. But it seems like these type things are temporary, you dress up for an event or festival, etc. Many of these people make these fantasies a lifestyle, no, more than just a lifestyle, a way of life, a way of thinking. They assume the roles permanently and get the body piercings, tattoos, etc. to verify it. However, this explanation seems as good as any.
DeleteFantasy, the ultimate escape from a boring life. Or from reality. Science fiction is my preferred escape but I just read and go to movies.

DeleteThese Yuppie pseudo "bikers" are all the rage in California, among other states. It's almost a point of pride for some of these weekend warriors to brag "I'm actually a doctor (lawyer, stockbroker, etc.), but on the weekend me and my fellow bikers love to get on our Hogs and go on a run! Yeah!!"

ReplyDeleteI think they call it "escape". Their "real" lives must really suck to want to dress in some of those weird get-ups. I'd rather escape into a good book.

Dressing up on occasion for something like a costume party, I get. But putting lots of time into it and living an imaginary role just seems silly. But no sillier, I suppose, than folks who get all wrapped up in alternate reality MMPRPGs.
