Two years ago, National Public Radio host Michele Norris initiated a project to try to start a national conversation on race. She did it by distributing 200 postcards on which she asked people to express their thoughts on race in six words.
Six words pretty much cuts to the core of the issue and today, via email, website (theracecardproject.com) Facebook and Twitter, she has received over 12,000 submissions.
Such as:
"You know my race. Not Me."
"Chinese or American? Does it matter?"
"Waiting for race not to matter."
Michelle Norris: "Still more work to be done."
Mr. Charleston: "Difference between Niggers and Crackers = Color." There is no other difference. We are all the same under the skin.
You (in six words) = ??
we can only hope that one day it really won't matter the color. we say it doesn't ..but there are too many people that don't agree..makes me sad.
ReplyDeleteOne difference: Crackers don't address each other as "Cracker" in every sentence. I don't know if that's true or not, but a standup comedian was talking about that a few years ago. "Cracker, gimme some of that there chewin' tobacca." "Cracker, did you drink all the Lone Star Beer?"
ReplyDeleteThat's true. Can yew chew it down to six words? I dare ya.
DeleteRace shouldn't matter. It still does.
ReplyDeletecharacter comes in many beautiful colors.
ReplyDeleteWhy do we care about color?
ReplyDeleteI'd have to agree with Ms. Norris' words.
ReplyDeleteIt's about shape and behavior. Can'y make a thought, no lips, funny feet, a fool, uneven body structure, redface, shredder, and the stinker.
