The Old Ball Coach

The phone rang.  I answered.  "Mr. C, this is Steve Spurrier.  I'm sorry...  how 'bout Saturday at four?"  Great!  Wait a minute... that was Steve Spurrier.  No secretary.  No assistant.
The door bell rang.  It was the coach.  By himself.  No driver.  No retinue.
We talked for an hour before he had to go.

Friday Flash 55 at the G-Man's

This is the story of a television interview I did with Steve Spurrier.  It was a fundraiser for public television featuring Florida Gator football.  Steve had just been hired as head coach.  One of the nicest, most self-effacing persons I have ever met.  Just proves, you can't judge a book by the cover.

  1. Maybe he left the retinue behind to have mercy on your poor liquor cabinet? These 55's are a trip eh?

    1. He un-retired his jersey, #12, at UF and is the only player to leave his Heisman trophy at the school.

  3. Like Nick Sabin, some coaches are more suited for College instead of the Pro's.
Mr. C, that's not entirely true.
I've been in St. Johns arena in Columbus many times, and as you walk in BOTH of Archie Griffin's Heisman trophies are on display. (Unless they were fakes, and with the Buckeye's reputation what it is, that may be the case)
Loved your Gatorade 55 Mr. C
Thanks for playing, thanks for your awesome support, and have a Kick Ass Week-End

  4. The Gators and Steve Spurrier ... no other team, no other coach can touch them in the eyes of my 51-year old son.
